Beer Label Designs

A 4-pack inspired by Ottawa nature spots

The original brief is to design two Ottawa-themed beer cans for Dominion City, a local craft brewery in Ottawa with a mission to “make great beer delivered with honesty and authenticity.” The set was later expanded to make a 4-can series.

The designs pull inspiration from various nature spots around the city, highlighting the defining features of each place. The main challenge was to effectively capture the distinctiveness of the places rather than generic nature scenes.

Project Goals

Develop and execute the concept for a new product line for the brand, and promote the series:

Design and mockup a series of beer can labels
Create two animated ads

Introducing the Series

Springtime Arboretum

Inspired by the Dominion Arboretum in spring, the design captures its pink and white flowering crabapple, magnolia and cherry blossoms and the notable red pedestrian bridge over a small channel connected to the Rideau Canal.

Treading Kichi Sibi

Kichi Sibi is a multi-use winter trail along the Ottawa River. The design illustrates the scenery along the route and features snowshoes, which have Indigenous roots and have became a symbol of Canadian culture.

Turtle in the Bog

The design captures the Mer Bleue Bog, a conservation area in the Southern Greenbelt and a boreal habitat for many regional and rare species of plants, birds, and other wildlife such as the spotted turtle.

Rockcliffe Canopy

Rockcliff Park is a neighborhood park along the Rockcliffe Parkway by the Ottawa River. The design features an autumn scene with towering mature trees such as maples and oaks creating a canopy. The Rockcliffe Pavilion is a popular spot for weddings and events.

The Outcome

A distinctive and customizable set showcasing the natural beauty of Ottawa, customers will recognize their favorite spots within these beer cans. By respecting the overall layout structure, the series can be easily expanded to include designs for other nature spots while remaining a cohesive collection. Different illustration styles and typefaces can be used to add variety.
