Beer Label Designs

A 4-pack inspired by Ottawa nature

The original brief is to design two Ottawa-themed beer cans for Dominion City, a local craft brewery in Ottawa with a mission to “make great beer delivered with honesty and authenticity.” The designs pull inspiration from various nature spots around the city, highlighting the defining features of each place. The set was later expanded to make a 4-can series. Two animated ads were created to promote the series.

Introducing the Series

Springtime Arboretum

The Dominion Arboretum, a rolling land inside the Experimental Farm, turns pink and white in spring with flowering crabapple, magnolia and cherry blossoms. The red pedestrian bridge is an notable structure over a small channel connected to the Rideau Canal.

Treading Kichi Sibi

Kichi Sibi is a multi-use winter trail along the Ottawa River. The design features snowshoes, which have Indigenous roots and have became a powerful symbol of Canadian culture.

Turtle in the Bog

The bog as in Mer Bleue Bog—a conservation area in the Southern Greenbelt—it is a boreal habitat for many regional and rare species of plants, birds and other wildlife such as the spotted turtle.

Rockcliffe Canopy

Rockcliff Park is a neighborhood park along the Rockcliffe Parkway by the Ottawa River, featuring towering mature trees such as maples and oaks creating a canopy in the summer. A defining landmark is the Rockcliffe Pavilion, a popular spot for weddings and events.

The Outcome

A cohesive and expandable collection celebrating Ottawa

A flexible and customizable beer can series showcasing the natural beauty of Ottawa. By respecting the overall layout, this series can be easily expanded to include beer designs for other nature spots while remaining a cohesive collection. Different illustration styles and typefaces can be used to add dynamism to the collection.
